In a recent study we attempted to characterize alien species in two regions in Argentina (Prinzing et al ., 2002). We abandoned the widespread approach of comparing alien species with local natives. This approach confounds differences between aliens and nonaliens with differences between species from different parts of the world. Instead we used a source-area approach.
