It is often said that constraints affect creative production, both in terms of form and quality. Online social media platforms frequently impose constraints on the content that users can produce, limiting the range of possible contributions. Do these restrictions tend to push creators towards producing more or less successful content? How do creators adapt their contributions to fit the limits imposed by social media platforms? To answer these questions, we conduct an observational study of…

Adoption of Twitter's New Length Limit: Is 280 the New 140?

It is suggested that the new 280- character limit constitutes a new, less intrusive version of the old 140-character limit, and remains an important factor that should be considered in all studies using Twitter data.

Anticipated versus Actual Effects of Platform Design Change: A Case Study of Twitter's Character Limit

A case study of a particularly important real-world platform design change: Twitter's decision to double the character limit from 140 to 280 characters to soothe users' need to "cram" or "squeeze" their tweets, informed by modeling of historical user behavior.

Stylistic variation on the Donald Trump Twitter account: A linguistic analysis of tweets posted between 2009 and 2018

This study presents the first detailed description of stylistic variation on the Trump Twitter account based on a multivariate analysis of grammatical co-occurrence patterns in tweets posted between 2009 and 2018.

Characterizing User Reactions Towards Twitter's 280 Character Limit

The initial user reactions depict emotion diversity as well as dependence on geography, and the usage of character count post this change is highly skewed with newer character count usage present in tail of the distribution.

The Effect of Twitter App Policy Changes on the Sharing of Spatial Information through Twitter Users

The results show, among others, that policy changes in 2015 and 2019 led users to post a smaller proportion of tweets with exact coordinates and that doubling the limit of allowable characters as part of the 2017 policy change increased the number of place names mentioned in tweets.

Causal Effects of Brevity on Style and Success in Social Media

This work conducts a controlled experiment, in which crowd workers shorten social media posts to prescribed target lengths and other crowd workers subsequently rate the original and shortened versions, finding that concise messages are on average more successful than the original messages up to a length reduction.

Estimating community feedback effect on topic choice in social media with predictive modeling

It is found that 33% and 14% of active users in Reddit and Twitter, respectively, are influenced by community feedback, and the model suggests that this feedback alters the probability of topic continuation up to 14%, depending on the user and the amount of feedback.

How character limit affects language usage in tweets

The results show that online language producers adapt their texts to overcome limit constraints as well as the average word and sentence length.

What Does Twitter Say About Self-Regulated Learning? Mapping Tweets From 2011 to 2021

This study used Twitter to collect data on one of the most growing theories in education, namely Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) and carry out further analysis to investigate What Twitter says about SRL, which reveals insights on computationally processed topics.

Information Retention in the Multi-platform Sharing of Science

A burst-based framework for examining online discussions about science over time and across different platforms is presented and a keyword-based computational measure comparing an online post to the scientific article’s abstract is developed, finding a strong tendency towards low levels of information retention.
