Abstract It has been generally assumed that the use of Givens rotations provides significant advantages over the use of Householder transformations for the orthogonal decomposition of sparse matrices. It is also generally acknowledged that the opposite is true for dense matrices. In this paper, a way of applying Householder reflections is described which is competitive with or superior to the use of Givens rotations for sparse orthogonal decomposition.
