Bone marrow cells from BALB/c mice infected with Rauscher erythroblastosis virus produced five to twenty-five times more erythroid colonies in vitro in the absence of erythropoietin (EP) as compared to normal cells. A good correlation existed between the state of the disease and the number of hormone-independent erythroid colony-forming cells (CFU-E).
