Primary hamster embryo cells were grown in vitro with Dulbecco's minimal essential medium supplemented with 10% dialyzed, virus-screened fetal calf serum and adjusted to 0.1 mm Ca++. Cultures were segregated according to sex. Human adenovirus type 12 (Ad-12) induced foci of morphologically transformed cells in both sexes 10 to 12 days postinfection. The number of foci in replicate cultures did not vary statistically. Consistently more foci developed in female cultures than in similarly infected…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Phenotypic properties and tumor promotor-induced alterations in rat embryo cells transformed by adenovirus.

The results suggest that following adenovirus transformation there is a spontaneous progression in the expression of markers of transformation and that the phorbol ester tumor promoters can accelerate this process.

Feline sarcoma virus induced in vitro progression from premalignant to neoplastic transformation of human diploid cells

It was shown that FeLV-FeSV can induce morphological transformation in human cells in vitro and that there is a requirement for the cells to passage through soft agar before subsequent tumor formation (neoplastic transformation) can be demonstrated.

Effects of steroid hormones in fetal bovine serum on plating and cloning of human cells in vitro

Fetal bovine sera from each of three different commercial sources were tested for their ability to support cloning of human fibroblastoid cells in vitro and addition of estrogen or hydrocortisone to a culture medium that inhibits growth, with subsequent reversal of the inhibitory effect, implies that these hormones competitively regulate growth of responsive cells in vivo.

Influence of glucocorticoid, estrogen, and androgen hormones on transformation of human cells in vitro by feline sarcoma virus.

Evidence is suggestive of a posttranscriptional effect possibly modulating viral genome expression resulting in an increased efficiency of viral transformation, and an increased proliferation of transformed cells.

Alterations of enzymes associated with plasma membranes and cellular organelles during infection of CV-1 cells with Yaba tumor poxvirus.

Hormonal reversal of this resistance resulted in enzyme profiles that reflected the pattern of young susceptible cells, and changes in enzyme patterns indicated basic alterations in protein synthesis.

Enhancement of viral transformation for evaluation of the carcinogenic or mutagenic potential of inorganic metal salts.

With the exception of ZnCl2 and ZnSO4, enhancement was demonstrated by both a relative increase in the viral transformation frequency and an absolute increase inThe number of transformed foci among treated cells negate the possibility that enhancement resulted from the selection of transformation-sensitive cells.

Summary Small amounts of estrogens added to hamster cell cultures infected with human adenovirus type 12 produced a significant increase in rate of appearance and final numbers of viral transformed

Restoration of the host's immunologic capacity by removing cortisone resulted in the succesful abortion of established tumors in a significant proportion of animals, revealing that the primary cell-virus interactions associated with adenovirus-12 oncogenesis occurred in virtually all animals given 106.3 TCD50.

Sex-related resistance in hamsters to adenovirus-12 oncogenesis. 3. Influence of immunologic impairment by thymectomy or cortisone.

Results revealed that the primary cell-virus interactions associated with adenovirus-12 oncogenesis occurred in virtually all animals given 10 6.3 TCD 50, and Restoration of the host9s immunologic capacity by removing cortisone resulted in the succesful abortion of established tumors in a significant proportion of animals.

Cortisone on in vitro Viral Infection. II. Effect on Distribution of Cytopathic Effect and Acid Phosphatase Arrangement in Human Cells Infected with Poliovirus.∗

Diploid human cell cultures of embryonic lung origin were stained for acid phosphatase after infection with type 1 polio-viruses in presence and absence of cortisone, and the incidence of such stained cells was depressed by cortis one treatment, as was viral cytopathic effect.
