Datura (Solanaceae) is a small genus of plants that, for long, was thought to occur naturally in both the New and Old Worlds. However, recent studies indicate that all species in the genus originated in the Americas. This finding has prompted the conclusion that no species of Datura could have been present in the Old World prior to its introduction there by Europeans in the early 16th century CE. Further, the textual evidence traditionally cited in support of a pre-Columbian Old World presence…

In the wild hybridization of annual Datura species as unveiled by morphological and molecular comparisons

The findings suggest that the natural hybridization of annual Datura species occurs and could be the first step for speciation.

Kodamaea transpacifica f.a., sp. nov., a yeast species isolated from ephemeral flowers and insects in the Galapagos Islands and Malaysia: further evidence for ancient human transpacific contacts.
- BiologyInternational journal of systematic and evolutionary microbiology
- 2013
Sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene indicated that these strains belong to a novel yeast species of the Kodamaea clade, although the formation of ascospores was not observed, and the human-mediated dispersion of this species by transpacific contacts in ancient times is suggested.

The results suggest that Peru-Ecuador may not be the source of the Oceania sweetpotato germplasm, and natural dispersal from Mesoamerica is an alternative explanation, to the ‘Kumara hypothesis’, for the origin of theOceaniasweetpotato.

There exists the possibility that fruits of Lagenaria may have been transported to the New World by oceanic currents, and this possibility has been suggested by Towle (1952), and she cites certain pieces of evidence from the literature to support this idea.

Wind and ocean transport of organisms and propagules throughout the Tertiary, and especially at peaks of warmth, was likely a more important means of dispersal than would seem plausible under present conditions.
AFLP analysis of genetic relationships in the tribe Datureae (Solanaceae)

- 1999
The AFLP technique was evaluated as a tool for assessing species relationships within the tribe Datureae and genetic distances were estimated and a new classification is proposed, which maintains the arborescent species as a separate genus, Brugmansia, and recognises three sections within the genus Datura.

Phenetic analysis of Datura section Dutra (Solanaceae) in Mexico
- Environmental Science

Phenetic analysis of morphological characters of taxa in the section Dutra of the genus Dutra supported the recognition of seven species which shared similar anther length, seed surface texture, fruit dehiscence, corolla length, calyx lobe length, stamen length and leaf length, and it is probable that the domesticated D. metel was derived from wild D. inoxia.
