Semantic Web technologies give us the opportunity to understand today’s data-rich society and provide novel means to explore our past. Civil registration records such as birth, death, and marriage registers contain a vast amount of implicit information which can be revealed by structuring, linking and combining that information with other datasets and bodies of knowledge. In the Irish Record Linkage (IRL) Project 1864-1913, we have developed a data preservation and interpretation pipeline…

Towards Linked Vital Registration Data for Reconstituting Families and Creating Longitudinal Health Histories
The Irish Record Linkage 1864-1913 project aims to create a knowledge base containing historical birth-, marriageand death records encoded into RDF to reconstitute families and create longitudinal
PANIC: an integrated approach to the preservation of composite digital objects using Semantic Web services
The PANIC system successfully illustrates how the growing array of available preservation tools and services can be integrated to provide a sustainable, collaborative solution to the long-term preservation of large-scale collections of complex digital objects.
Neptuno: Semantic Web Technologies for a Digital Newspaper Archive
This work proposes the introduction of the emergent semantic-based technologies to improve the processes of creation, maintenance, and exploitation of the digital archive of a newspaper.
Linked Data - The Story So Far
The authors describe progress to date in publishing Linked Data on the Web, review applications that have been developed to exploit the Web of Data, and map out a research agenda for the Linked data community as it moves forward.
Semantic (Web) Technology In Action: Ontology Driven Information Systems for Search, Integration and Analysis
This work identifies a Semantic Technology that supports the key capabilities also needed to realize the Semantic Web vision, namely representing, acquiring and utilizing knowledge.
Towards the Semantic Web
The aim of the book is to support efficient and effective knowledge management and focuses on weakly-structured online information sources, and covers several highly significant contributions to the semantic web research effort, including a new language for defining ontologies, several novel software tools and a coherent methodology for the application of the tools for business advantage.
Registered ‘unknown’ infant fatalities in Ireland, 1916–32: gender and power
The phenomenon of ‘unknown’ infant deaths addressed in this article was first explored in the course of research on fatalities arising from political violence during the Irish revolution of

It is argued that linguistics, community-based real world “social” semantics and pragmatics, scalability, the tri-sortal nature of the communities involved, the balance between usability and reusability, and the methodological requirements for non-disruptive adoption by enterprises of the new technologies provide vectors for fundamental computer science research.
Towards the Semantic Web: Ontology-driven Knowledge Management
From the Publisher: "Towards the Semantic Web focuses on the application of Semantic Web technology and ontologies in particular to electronically available information to improve the quality of
Semantic Interoperation of Information Systems by Evolving Ontologies through Formalized Social Processes
This paper discusses formal aspects of the social processes involved, a so-called fact-oriented methodology and formalism to structure and describe these, as well as certain relevant aspect of the communities in which they occur, and reports on a prototypical tool set that supports such a methodology.
