Traditionally, Naegleria fowleri infections are labeled primary amebic meningoencephalitis because of prominent meningeal neutrophilic inflammation. Acanthamoeba spp. and Balamuthia mandrillaris are labeled granulomatous amebic encephalitis because of parenchymal granulomatous inflammation.
