A bstractWe analyze higher gauge theories in various dimensions using a supergeometric method based on a differential graded symplectic manifold, called a QP-manifold, which is closely related to the BRST-BV formalism in gauge theories. Extensions of the Lie 2-algebra gauge structure are formulated within the Lie n-algebra induced by the QP-structure. We find that in 5 and 6 dimensions there are special extensions of the gauge algebra. In these cases, a restriction of the gauge symmetry by…

Off-shell covariantization of algebroid gauge theories

We present a generalized method to construct field strengths and gauge symmetries, which yield a Yang-Mills type action with Lie n-algebroid gauge symmetry. The procedure makes use of off-shell

Metric algebroid and Dirac generating operator in Double Field Theory

We give a formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) based on a metric algebroid. We derive a covariant completion of the Bianchi identities, i.e. the pre-Bianchi identity in torsion and an improved

Metric Algebroid and Poisson-Lie T-duality in DFT

In this article we investigate the gauge invariance and duality properties of DFT based on a metric algebroid formulation given previously in [1]. The derivation of the general action given in this

Contravariant gravity on Poisson manifolds and Einstein gravity

A relation between gravity on Poisson manifolds proposed in Asakawa et al (2015 Fortschr. Phys. 63 683–704) and Einstein gravity is investigated. The compatibility of the Poisson and Riemann

BV and BFV for the H-Twisted Poisson Sigma Model

We present the BFV and the BV extension of the Poisson sigma model (PSM) twisted by a closed 3-form H. There exist superfield versions of these functionals such as for the PSM and, more generally,

Lectures on AKSZ Sigma Models for Physicists

This is an introductory review of topological field theories (TFTs) called AKSZ sigma models. The AKSZ construction is a mathematical formulation for the construction and analyses of a large class of

Generalized higher gauge theory

A bstractWe study a generalization of higher gauge theory which makes use of generalized geometry and seems to be closely related to double field theory. The local kinematical data of this theory is

An invitation to higher gauge theory

In this easy introduction to higher gauge theory, we describe parallel transport for particles and strings in terms of 2-connections on 2-bundles. Just as ordinary gauge theory involves a gauge

Aspects of effective theory for multiple M5-branes compactified on circle

A bstractA supersymmetric non-Abelian self-dual gauge theory with the explicit introduction of Kaluza-Klein modes is proposed to give a classical description of multiple M5-branes on ℝ5×S1$$

A non-abelian self-dual gauge theory in 5 + 1 dimensions

We construct a non-Abelian gauge theory of chiral 2-forms (self-dual gauge fields) in 6 dimensions with a spatial direction compactified on a circle of radius R. It has the following two properties.

Note on non-Abelian two-form gauge fields

A bstractMotivated by application to multiple M5-branes, we study some properties of non-Abelian two-form gauge theories. We emphasize that the fake curvature condition which is commonly used in the

General Yang-Mills type gauge theories for p-form gauge fields: From physics-based ideas to a mathematical framework OR From Bianchi identities to twisted Courant algebroids

Starting with minimal requirements from the physical experience with higher gauge theories, i.e. gauge theories for a tower of differential forms of different form degrees, we discover that all the

Non-abelian action for multiple five-branes with self-dual tensors

A bstractWe construct an action for non-abelian 2-form in 6-dimensions. Our action consists of a non-abelian generalization of the abelian action of Perry and Schwarz for a single five-brane. It
