Treatment of high blood pressure (BP) has not produced the expected reduction in risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Subjects with high BP often have the metabolic syndrome X, an aggregation of abnormalities in glucose and lipid metabolism. We tested the hypothesis that the BP level would be less predictive of risk of IHD in those with high triglycerides (TG) and low HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), the characteristic dyslipidemia in the metabolic syndrome than in those without.
