Changes in cortical activity during working memory tasks were examined with electroencephalograms (EEGs) sampled from 115 channels and spatially sharpened with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based finite element deblurring. Eight subjects performed tasks requiring comparison of each stimulus to a preceding one on verbal or spatial attributes. A frontal midline theta rhythm increased in magnitude with increased memory load. Dipole models localized this signal to the region of the anterior…
Simultaneous EEG-fMRI during a Working Memory Task: Modulations in Low and High Frequency Bands
Background EEG studies of working memory (WM) have demonstrated load dependent frequency band modulations. FMRI studies have localized load modulated activity to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex

Brain electrical activity signatures during performance of the Multisource Interference Task.
TLDR
The Multisource Interference Task reliably modulated brain electrical activity related to cognitive control and attention and the EEG indices obtained during the performance of this task may be useful for exploring the functioning of cognitive/attentional networks in healthy and clinical populations.
Effects of Working Memory Load on Oscillatory Power in Human Intracranial EEG
TLDR
The findings suggest that power in any given frequency band is not a unitary phenomenon; rather, reactivity in the same frequency band varies in different brain regions, and may relate to the engagement or inhibition of a given area in a cognitive task.
Dissociation of sustained attention from central executive functions: local activity and interregional connectivity in the theta range
TLDR
Results suggest that local theta activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus represents correlates of an attentional system that allocate cognitive resources and is compatible with a model in which theta long‐range coupling indicates integration of sensory information into executive control components of complex motor behaviour.
Distinction between Perceptual and Attentional Processing in Working Memory Tasks: A Study of Phase-locked and Induced Oscillatory Brain Dynamics
TLDR
A time-frequency analysis of the 3 to 30 Hz EEG oscillatory activity in a verbal n-back working memory paradigm is proposed, providing further functional information on the fronto-posterior network supporting working memory.

Electroencephalogram correlates of higher cortical functions.
TLDR
By means of two-stage, nonlinear multivariate pattern recognition, electroencephalograms (EEG's) were analyzed during performance of verbal and spatial tasks, finding no evidence for lateralization of different cognitive functions was found in the EEG.
High resolution evoked potential imaging of the cortical dynamics of human working memory.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging of human prefrontal cortex activation during a spatial working memory task.
TLDR
The localization of spatial working memory function in humans to a circumscribed area of the middle frontal gyrus supports the compartmentalization of working memory functions in the human prefrontal cortex and the localization ofatial memory processes to comparable areas in humans and nonhuman primates.

Evidence for a two-stage model of spatial working memory processing within the lateral frontal cortex: a positron emission tomography study.
TLDR
P positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance imaging is used to demonstrate the existence of two functionally distinct subdivisions of the lateral frontal cortex, which may subserve different aspects of spatial working memory.
Practice-related changes in human brain functional anatomy during nonmotor learning.
TLDR
Examination of the functional anatomy of the human brain with positron emission tomography during the naive and practiced performance of a simple verbal response selection task indicates that two distinct circuits can be used forverbal response selection and normal subjects can change the brain circuits used during task performance following less than 15 min of practice.

Working memory and preparation elicit different patterns of slow wave event-related brain potentials.
TLDR
During the S1-S2 interval, ERP slow negatives varied with both the type and amount of material held in working memory, which ruled out preparation only as an explanation.
