In plants, the chromosomal high mobility group (HMG) proteins of the HMGB family typically contain a central HMG-box DNA-binding domain that is flanked by a basic N-terminal and an acidic C-terminal domain. The HMGB proteins are abundant and highly mobile proteins in the cell nucleus that influence chromatin structure and enhance the accessibility of binding sites to regulatory factors.
