The gut microbiota is mainly composed of the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria; the Verrucomicrobia phylum is occasionally observed. Antibiotics can change the bacterial diversity of the gut, with limited changes in the proportions of phyla.
