We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neon K-shell and iron L-shell interstellar absorption edges in nine X-ray binaries using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We found that the iron absorption is well fit by an experimental determination of the cross section for metallic iron, although with a slight wavelength shift of ≈20 mÅ. The neon edge region is best fit by a model that includes the neutral neon edge and three…
Oxygen, neon, and iron X-ray absorption in the local interstellar medium
We present a detailed study of X-ray absorption in the local interstellar medium by analyzing the X-ray spectra of 24 galactic sources obtained with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating
HIGH-RESOLUTION X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY OF THE MULTIPHASE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM TOWARD Cyg X-2
High-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing chemical and physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at various phases. We present detections of K
MODELING THE OXYGEN K ABSORPTION IN THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM: AN XMM-NEWTON VIEW OF Sco X-1
We investigate the X-ray absorption structure of oxygen in the interstellar medium by analyzing XMM-Newton observations of the low-mass X-ray binary Sco X-1. Simple models based on the O i atomic
High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the interstellar medium - XMM-Newton observation of the LMXB GS 1826–238
Aims. The interstellar medium (ISM) has a multiphase structure characterized by gas, dust, and molecules. The gas can be found in different charge states: neutral, weakly ionized (warm) and highly
WAVELENGTH MEASUREMENTS OF K TRANSITIONS OF OXYGEN, NEON, AND MAGNESIUM WITH X-RAY ABSORPTION LINES
Accurate atomic transition data are important in many astronomical research areas, especially for studies of line spectroscopy. Whereas transition data of He-like and H-like ions (i.e., ions in
High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy of the Ultracompact LMXB Pulsar 4U 1626–67
We report results from four recent observations of the ultracompact LMXB pulsar 4U 1626-67. These observations obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra with Chandra HETGS and XMM RGS, allowing us to
X-ray reflection in oxygen-rich accretion discs of ultracompact X-ray binaries
We present spectroscopic X-ray data of two candidate ultra-compact X-ray binaries: 4U 0614+091 and 4U 1543−624. We confirm the presence of a broad O VIII Lyα reflection line (at≈ 18 A) using
Carbon X-ray absorption in the local ISM: Fingerprintsin X-ray Novae spectra
We present a study of the C K-edge using high-resolution LETGS Chandraspectra of four novae during their super-soft-source (SSS) phase. We identified absorption lines due to C II Kα, C III Kα, and C
On the detectability of CO molecules in the interstellar medium via X-ray spectroscopy
We present a study of the detectability of CO molecules in the Galactic interstellar medium using high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. We
Si K EDGE STRUCTURE AND VARIABILITY IN GALACTIC X-RAY BINARIES
We survey the Si K edge structure in various absorbed Galactic low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to study states of silicon in the inter- and circum-stellar medium. The bulk of these LMXBs lie toward
