Background: Honduras has the highest concentration of HIV and AIDS cases in Central America, with an estimated adult HIV prevalence of 1.5%. Prevalence is higher among certain ethnic groups such as the Garífuna with a reported HIV prevalence of 8%. Methods: A biological and behavioral survey was conducted on a stratified random sample of the Garífuna population in Honduras, using computer-assisted interviews. Blood was tested for HIV, herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2), and syphilis; urine was…

Short communication: HIV incidence among vulnerable populations in Honduras: results from an integrated behavioral and biological survey among female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and Garifuna in Honduras, 2006.
Honduras has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Central America. Data on HIV incidence are needed to identify groups at greatest need of prevention interventions to inform the national HIV
HIV, syphilis, and viral hepatitis among Latin American indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants: a systematic review
TLDR
The gaps in existing data on the burden of HIV, STIs, and VH in indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants in Latin America highlight the need to improve national surveillance, by systematically collecting and analyzing ethnicity variables, and implementing integrated biobehavioral studies using robust methodologies and culturally sensitive strategies.
Migration, Multiple Sexual Partnerships, and Sexual Concurrency in the Garífuna Population of Honduras
TLDR
Among both men and women, temporary migration in the last year was associated with an increased likelihood of multiple sexual partnerships and with concurrency, though only the association between migration and multipleSexual partnerships among men was statistically significant (adjusted Prevalence Ratio 1.7).
Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium in different population groups: systematic review andmeta-analysis
TLDR
The low estimated prevalence of M. genitalium in the general population, pregnant women and asymptomatic attenders at clinics does not support expansion of testing to these groups, and can inform testing guidelines for M. genitalsium testing.
Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium in different population groups: systematic review and meta-analysis
TLDR
The low estimated prevalence of M. genitalium in the general population, pregnant women and asymptomatic attenders at clinics does not support expansion of testing to asymPTomatic people in these groups, and can inform testing guidelines for M. genitalsium infection.
Ethnicity and HIV risk behaviour, testing and knowledge in Guatemala
TLDR
The Mayan indigenous population in Guatemala, while broadly socially vulnerable, does not appear to be at elevated risk for HIV based on this analysis of selected risk factors, but low rates of HIV knowledge and testing may be cause for concern.
Critical Population Spotlight: HIV and the Garífuna of Honduras—Comment on Gandhi et al. “Migration, Multiple Sexual Partnerships, and Sexual Concurrency in the Garífuna Population of Honduras”
TLDR
The racial and ethnic heritage of the Garifuna is key to understanding the current HIV crisis in this subpopulation, which has mixed racial heritages and is at particularly high-risk for HIV infection relative to their nonminority Honduran counterparts.

TLDR
In general, HSV-2 seroprevalence is high in populations whose behaviour leads to a high risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as STI clinic attendees and sex workers (SWs), with some African studies reporting greater than 80% HSV seropositivity in SWs.
Risk of human immunodeficiency virus infection in herpes simplex virus type 2-seropositive persons: a meta-analysis.
TLDR
Control strategies for HSV-2 need to be incorporated into control of sexually transmitted infections as a strategy for HIV prevention.
Herpes simplex virus type 2: epidemiology and management options in developing countries
TLDR
With rising HSV2 prevalence contributing to an increase in the proportion of GUD attributed to genital herpes in high-HIV prevalence settings, a safe and effective HSV vaccine is urgently needed and multifaceted interventions are required.
Herpes simplex virus 2 infection increases HIV acquisition in men and women: systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
TLDR
Prevalent HSV-2 infection is associated with a three-fold increased risk of HIV acquisition among both men and women in the general population, suggesting that, in areas of high HSVs-2 prevalence, a high proportion of HIV is attributable to HSv-2.
