Abstract Cats are important in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii because they are the only hosts that excrete environmentally resistant oocysts in feces. In the present study, 158 feral cats from Giza, Egypt, were examined for T. gondii infection. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 97.4% with the modified agglutination test. Viable T. gondii was isolated from tissues (brain, heart, tongue) of 115 of 137 cats by bioassay in mice. These isolates were designated TgCatEg 1–115; none of these…
A high seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in a population of feral cats in the Western Cape province of South Africa
TLDR
The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies in the serum of a sample of feral cats (Felis catus), which were trapped in population control programs in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Genetic characterization of viable Toxoplasma gondii isolates from stray dogs from Giza, Egypt.
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN FAECAL SAMPLES OF CATS OBTAINED FROM HOUSE OF MATERNAL IN BALI
TLDR
It is concluded that the presence of oocyst-positive feces in the environment in conjuction with education level were considered to play significant contribution to the accident of toxoplamosis in pregnant women.
Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii Isolates and Toxoplasmosis Seroprevalence in Stray Cats of İzmir, Turkey
TLDR
The relatively high seropositivity rates and the variety of T. gondii genotypes confirm the local stray cat population as a risk factor for human toxoplasmosis in İzmir, and raises the possibility of transportation of these strains between continents through trade routes or long distance migratory birds.
High prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii oocyst shedding in stray and pet cats (Felis catus) in Virginia, United States
TLDR
The incidence of oocyst shedding in the cat population studied was significantly higher than expected and higher than found in most cat populations world-wide.
Genetic Diversity of Toxoplasma gondii Isolates in Egyptian Feral Cats Reveals New Genotypes
TLDR
A strong clonal population structure with the dominance of clonal Type II and III lineages of T. gondii in feral cats from Egypt is revealed.

TOXOPLASMA GONDII INFECTIONS IN CATS FROM PARANÁ, BRAZIL: SEROPREVALENCE, TISSUE DISTRIBUTION, AND BIOLOGIC AND GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF ISOLATES
TLDR
The results indicate that T. gondii localizes in muscle tissue more than the brains of cats and support the view that Brazilian and North American T. Gondii isolates are genetically distinct.
Population biology of Toxoplasma gondii: what's out and where did they come from.
TLDR
Recent genotyping data from chickens in Brazil, and pigs, lambs and white-tailed deer in the USA, are summarized to demonstrate the high genetic diversity and geographical distribution of T. gondii.
Short report: prevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in northern Egypt.
TLDR
The high prevalence of toxoplasmosis and neosporosis in cattle affects the development of the livestock industry and is also an important infective source for human infection in Egypt.
Serologic diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in cats fed Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts.
TLDR
Although cats had no clinical signs of toxoplasmosis, T gondii antibody titers remained high (greater than 1:1,000) for up to 29 months, and the modified agglutination test, using whole formalin-preserved tachyzoites, was more sensitive for diagnosis of toxplasmosis than were other tests.
Duration of immunity to shedding of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts by cats.

TLDR
To investigate if this immunity persists in cats for 6 yr, 12 4-6-mo-old cats without T. gondii antibodies were inoculated orally with tissue cysts of the ME-49 strain and the TS-2 strain and 9 cats re-shed T. Gondii oocysts Seventy-seven months after primary infection.
Long-term antibody responses of cats fed toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts.
TLDR
As part of a long-term study on immunity to oocyst shedding, 12 4-6-mo-old cats were inoculated orally with tissue cysts of the ME-49 strain or the TS-2 strain of Toxoplasma gondii, where two cats died or were killed because of acute toxoplasmosis 12 and 13 days after inoculation (DAI), respectively.
Toxoplasma infection of stray cats in Egypt.
TLDR
Toxoplasmosis in cats, as revealed by serologic surveys, seems to prevail more during the warm rather than the hot season of the year being favoured by milder temperature and higher relative humidity and rainfall in the former season.
Cyst-induced toxoplasmosis in cats.
TLDR
Five new structural stages of Toxoplasma designated as “types” A-E were found in the epithelial cells of the small and large intestine, described from cats orally inoculated with Toxplasma cysts.
THE TOXOPLASMA GONDII OOCYST FROM CAT FECES
TLDR
Oocysts could not be separated from infectivity by filtration, by continuous particle electrophoresis, or by density gradient centrifugation, and 1 and 2% sulfuric acid, and 2.5% potassium dichromate were found to be the best preservatives for sporulation of oocysts and for the development of Toxoplasma infectivity.
Comparative study between serological and molecular methods for diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in women and small ruminants in Egypt.
TLDR
It was concluded that serological tests can detect higher rate of toxoplasmosis than PCR, so ELISA combined with the PCR technique is a recommended tool for accurate diagnosis of toxplasmosis.
