Objectives: To identify the incidence of undiagnosed cervical myelopathy in patients who fall and develop hip fractures compared with age-matched controls. Design: Prospective, case–control study. Setting: University level 1 Trauma Center. Patients/Participants: Consecutive patients who presented with hip fractures after a fall. A total of 159 patients were screened; 66 patients (38 arthroplasty, 28 fracture) were eligible for enrollment in the study. Exclusion criteria included cognitive…
Fragility Fracture Risk in Elderly Patients With Cervical Myelopathy
TLDR
Fragility fractures are a significant source of morbidity and mortality in elderly patients and CSM is associated with increased rates of fragility fractures, although surgical management of CSM may be protective against risk of Fragility fracture.
Effectiveness of Surgical Treatment for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy in Preventing Falls and Fall-Related Neurological Deterioration: A Prospective Multi-Institutional Study.
TLDR
Surgical intervention for DCM is effective not only in reducing the frequency of falls, but also in reduced the risk of fall-related deterioration of motor deficits.
Characterizing Gait Abnormalities in Patients with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: A Neuromuscular Analysis.
Degenerative cervical myelopathy
TLDR
Owing to its mobility, the vertebral column of the neck is particularly prone to degenerative changes such as disc herniation, ligament hypertrophy or ossification, and osteophyte formation, which are more common with age and are often collectively termed spondylosis.
The effect of ageing on presentation, management and outcomes in degenerative cervical myelopathy: a systematic review.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that age significantly influences the presentation, management and outcomes of DCM, and although older patients have worse health at all individual timepoints, they experience the same absolute benefit from surgery as younger patients.
Grip Strength as a Screening Index for Severe Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy in Primary Care: Development of Cutoff Values Using Receiver Operating Curve Analysis
TLDR
Grip strength had moderate-to-high diagnostic accuracy for DCM between participants in the control and DCM groups and easily applicable cutoff values for primary care DCM screening with ≥90% sensitivity were developed.
Research Inefficiency in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Findings of a Systematic Review on Research Activity Over the Past 20 Years
TLDR
DCM research activity is increasing internationally, with surgery remaining the focus, and research output has predominantly been from developed countries; however, the rate of growth for developed and developing countries is comparable.
A Novel Insight Into the Challenges of Diagnosing Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy Using Web-Based Symptom Checkers
TLDR
DCM symptoms are poorly identified by Web-based symptom checkers, which leads to a large differential of many other common conditions, including multiple sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy.
The Prevalence of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Spinal Cord Compression on Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
TLDR
The first estimates of the prevalence of asymptomatic SCC and DCM, an often-progressive neurological disease that can cause quadriplegia, are presented.
Improving Awareness Could Transform Outcomes in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy [AO Spine RECODE-DCM Research Priority Number 1]
TLDR
The evidence that awareness of Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy is low is reviewed, the potential drivers, and why this must be addressed, and case studies of success from other diseases are reviewed, drawing potential parallels and opportunities for DCM.

Prevalence of Physical Signs in Cervical Myelopathy: A Prospective, Controlled Study
TLDR
Although myelopathic signs are significantly more common in CM patients, they may be negative in approximately one-fifth and can not be relied on to make the diagnosis, as symptoms combined with correlative imaging studies must be used to base treatment decisions.
Presymptomatic Spondylotic Cervical Cord Compression
TLDR
Electrophysiological abnormalities together with clinical signs of cervical radiculopathy could predict clinical manifestation of preclinical spondylotic cervical cord compression.
A prospective survey of the causes of non-traumatic spastic paraparesis and tetraparesis in 585 patients
TLDR
This survey shows the pattern of diseases producing non-traumatic myelopathy in the Merseyside and North Wales and increasing use of outpatient MRI for primary investigation may make comparable surveys impossible in the future.

This survey shows the pattern of diseases producing non-traumatic myelopathy in the Merseyside and North Wales and increasing use of outpatient MRI for primary investigation may make comparable surveys impossible in the future.
Increased mortality in patients with a hip fracture-effect of pre-morbid conditions and post-fracture complications
TLDR
Patients with a hip fracture have a pronounced excess mortality risk and the main cause was linked to the trauma that caused the fracture event and not to pre-existing co-morbidity.
Asymptomatic degenerative disk disease and spondylosis of the cervical spine: MR imaging.
Evidence on magnetic resonance (MR) images of disk degeneration and herniation, as well as of cord and root impingement, may be regarded either as normal, age-related changes or as causative of
Clinical pathway after hip fracture
TLDR
A suggested algorithmic approach to the patient that begins with the initial evaluation, progresses on through pre-operative and operative management, and ends with post-operative rehabilitation and treatment is outlined.
National trends in spinal fusion for cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
Prevalence of cervical spine stenosis. Anatomic study in cadavers.
TLDR
Cervical spine stenosis appears to be very common and the radiographic finding of cervical stenosis should therefore be correlated with the clinical presentation prior to decision-making regarding treatment.
Age-Related Changes of Thoracic and Cervical Intervertebral Discs in Asymptomatic Subjects
TLDR
Degenerative changes in the thoracic spine on MRI was observed in approximately half of the asymptomatic subjects, whereas their incidences were less frequent than those in the cervical spine.
