We report the results of a spectropolarimetric survey of the CfA and 12 μm samples of Seyfert 2 (S2) galaxies. Polarized (hidden) broad-line regions (HBLRs) are confirmed in a number of galaxies, and several new cases (F02581-1136, MCG -3-58-7, NGC 5995, NGC 6552, NGC 7682) are reported. The 12 μm S2 galaxy sample shows a significantly higher incidence of HBLRs (50%) than its CfA counterpart (30%), suggesting that the latter may be incomplete in hidden active galactic nuclei. Compared to the…

Seyfert 2 Galaxies with Spectropolarimetric Observations
We present a compilation of radio, infrared, optical, and hard X-ray (2-10 keV) data for a sample of 90 Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy2s) with spectropolarimetric observations (41 Sy2s with detection of
The dichotomy of Seyfert 2 galaxies: intrinsic differences and evolution
We present a study of the local environment (≤200 h −1 kpc) of 31 hidden broad line region (HBLR) and 43 non-HBLR Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies in the nearby universe (z ≤ 0.04). To compare our findings,
Are Seyfert 2 Galaxies without Polarized Broad Emission Lines More Obscured
New XMM-Newton data of seven Seyfert 2 galaxies with optical spectropolarimetric observations are presented. An analysis of the 0.5–10 keV spectra shows that four Seyfert 2 galaxies with polarized
Upholding the unified model for active galactic nuclei: VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetry of Seyfert 2 galaxies
The origin of the unification model for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) was the detection of broad hydrogen recombination lines in the optical polarized spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy (Sy2) NGC 1068.
Dust Morphology of Hidden Broad-Line Region and Non-Hidden Broad-Line Region Seyfert 2 Galaxies
We investigate the nuclear dust properties of hidden broad-line region (HBLR) and non-HBLR Seyfert 2 galaxies. Optical images obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope for a selected sample of HBLR
The Spectral Energy Distributions of Different Types of Seyfert Galaxies
We calculated the average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s) and two types of Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s with or without polarized broad-line regions, i.e. HBLRs and
The dust geometric distribution in Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies, isolated and in interaction
We analyse the mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of 39 Seyfert galaxies observed with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our sample consists of 19 Seyfert type 1 (Sy1)
An XMM–Newton spectral survey of 12 μm selected galaxies – II. Implications for AGN selection and unification
We present a multi-waveband analysis of a 126-galaxy sub-sample of the 12 μm galaxy sample ( 12MGS), for which we have carried out a detailed X-ray spectral analysis in a previous paper. We determine
Near-infrared spectroscopy of nearby Seyfert galaxies. II. Molecular content and coronal emission
We present sub-arcsec near-infrared 1.5 – 2.5 µm moderate resolution long-slit spectra of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies (z <0.01), both parallel to the ionization cone and perpendicular to it. These
On the nature of the near-UV extended light in Seyfert galaxies
We study the nature of the extended near-UV emission in the inner kiloparsec of a sample of 15 Seyfert (Sy) galaxies which have both near-UV (F330W) and narrow-band [O iii] high-resolution Hubble

The Radio Properties of Seyfert Galaxies in the 12 Micron and CfA Samples
We report the results of 20, 6, and 2 cm VLA and 1.5 cm OVRO observations of two similar radio-quiet active galaxy and quasar (AGN) samples: the optically selected CfA Seyfert galaxies and the
Spectropolarimetry of high-polarization Seyfert 2 galaxies and unified Seyfert theories
Spectropolarimetry was used to study eight high-polarization Seyfert 2 galaxies. In four of them (Mrk 3, Mrk 348, Mrk 463E, and NGC 7674), evidence was found for a hidden broad-line region (BLR),
Infrared Spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 Galaxies: A Look through the Obscuring Torus?
High-resolution J-band and K-band spectra of a sample of 33 Seyfert 2 galaxies are presented. Two of these galaxies were also observed in the L band. These data are used to look for broad Paβ, Brγ,
A Hidden Broad-Line Region in the Weak Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 788
We have detected a broad Hα emission line in the polarized flux spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 788, indicating that it contains an obscured Seyfert 1 nucleus. Although such features have been
The Nonstellar Infrared Continuum of Seyfert Galaxies
JHKL'M (1 - 5 micrometers) imaging of a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies is presented. We have performed an accurate estimate of the near-infrared non-stellar nuclear fluxes. We confirm that the
The Nuclear and Circumnuclear Stellar Population in Seyfert 2 Galaxies: Implications for the Starburst-Active Galactic Nucleus Connection
We report the results of a spectroscopic investigation of a sample of 20 of the brightest type 2 Seyfert nuclei. Our goal is to search for the direct spectroscopic signature of massive stars and
Testing the Unified Model with an Infrared-selected Sample of Seyfert Galaxies
We present a series of statistical tests done to a sample of 29 Seyfert 1 and 59 Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from mostly isotropic properties, their far-infrared fluxes and warm infrared colors. Such
The unified model and the Seyfert 2 infrared dichotomy
An optical spectropolarimetric study has shown that the detectability of polarised broad H-alpha in Seyfert 2 galaxies is correlated to the IRAS f60/f25 flux ratio where only those Seyfert 2s with
A Polarimetric Search for Hidden Quasars in Three Radio-selected Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We have carried out a spectropolarimetric search for hidden broad-line quasars in three ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) discovered in the positional correlations between sources detected in
The Close Environment of Seyfert Galaxies and Its Implication for Unification Models
In this Letter, we present a statistical analysis of the circumgalactic environment of nearby Seyfert galaxies based on a computer-aided search of companion galaxies on the Digitized Sky Survey. We
