Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors for herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 in patients attending 2 Canadian sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics. Study: Stored sera were tested for the presence of IgG class antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2 and results linked to that obtained from a risk behavior questionnaire. Results: Overall prevalences for HSV-1 and -2 were 56% and 19%, respectively. HSV-1 and -2 seropositivity was…
Seroprevalence and factors associated with herpes simplex virus type 2 among HIV-negative high-risk men who have sex with men from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: a cross-sectional study
TLDR
A high prevalence of HSV-2 infection in a sample of HIV-negative high-risk MSM from Rio de Janeiro made evident indicates the need and urgency for implementing integrated programs for the prevention of HSVs simplex virus type 2 and other sexually transmitted diseases, and, in particular, programs targeting high- risk MSM.
Seroprevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 and Characteristics Associated With Undiagnosed Infection: New York City, 2004
TLDR
HSV-2 is highly prevalent and largely undiagnosed in New York City; seroprevalence varies by subgroup; targeted HSV- 2 screening, counseling and treatment may help reduce transmission of HSv-2 and human immunodeficiency virus.
Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus-1 and -2 in attendees of a sexually transmitted infection clinic in Singapore.
TLDR
Although HSV-2 is a common infection among STI clinic attendees in Singapore, there is an unsatisfactory level of knowledge among the attendees about HSV infection and public education programs should be introduced to address this.
Prevalence of herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 in a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Miami.
TLDR
The data shows high infection rates for HSV-1 and 2 in this community, and especially among the Hispanic population, and efforts to decrease acquisition among theHispanic population should be a focus of future STI prevention programs.
Transmission of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in a prospective cohort of HIV-negative gay men: the health in men study.
TLDR
Public-health strategies targeted against anogenital herpes increasingly need to take into account the importance of HSV-1 infection, as there were more HSv-1 thanHSV-2 seroconversions.
Co-Infection Prevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 and 2 with Human Papillomavirus and Associated Risk Factors among Asymptomatic Women in Ghana
TLDR
The high prevalence of co-infection was due to the endemicity and inadequate intervention in the study population, and the urgent need to develop appropriate interventional strategies to manage and cancel patients presenting with asymptomatic genital herpes is stressed.
Seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies in Canadian women screened for enrolment in a herpes simplex virus vaccine trial
TLDR
The likelihood of participants being seropositive to HSV-1 and to HSv-2 was found to increase with age and to positively correlate with the population of the city in which they resided, and hypotheses are proposed to account for differences in racial seropositivity.
Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis and herpes simplex virus type 2: Results from the 2009 to 2011 Canadian Health Measures Survey.
TLDR
This study is the first in Canada to report laboratory-confirmed prevalence of chlamydia and HSV-2 using a nationally representative sample, and results suggest that most infected people are unaware of their status.
Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Egypt.
TLDR
The data show a higher exposure to HSV-1 and 2 both primary infections and reactivation among ALL children, and acyclovir prophylaxis could be highly effective for seropositive leukemic patients who are undergoing induction chemotherapy.
Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Viral and Bacterial Infections in HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Men Who Have Sex with Men in Toronto
TLDR
Syphilis and viral infections, including HBV, HCV, HSV-2, CMV, and HR-HPV, were common in this clinic-based population of MSM in Toronto and more frequent among MSM living with HIV.

Seroprevalence and correlates of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in five sexually transmitted-disease clinics.
TLDR
HSV-2 infection is common in STD clinic attendees in the United States, even among young age groups, especially among women, and efforts to prevent genital herpes should begin at an early age.
Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 and cytomegalovirus in adolescents.
TLDR
The data demonstrating a high prevalence of infection during adolescence suggest that immunization for HSV, HSV-2, and CMV may need to occur in childhood.
Epidemiology of genital herpes in Pittsburgh: serologic, sexual, and racial correlates of apparent and inapparent herpes simplex infections.
TLDR
HSV-2 infection as determined by seroprevalence was significantly and independently associated with age, years of sexual activity, race, one or more episodes of other genital infections, lower annual family income, and multiple sexual partners.
Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type 2 antibodies in an STD clinic in Paris
TLDR
The very high HSV-2 seroprevalence of patients with STDs, only a few of whom have a history of genital herpes, underlines the need for detection and counselling for these patients.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 and other genital ulcerative infections as a risk factor for HIV-1 acquisition.
TLDR
Little evidence is found for genital ulcerative infections being an important independent risk factor for HIV-1 acquisition among homosexual men in Amsterdam during the time period studied, and a significant difference between the prevalence of HSV-2 antibodies amongAIDS seroconverters and controls was found.
Seroprevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection Among Attendees of a Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic in Italy
TLDR
This is the first Italian survey of HSV‐2 infection conducted with a properly validated, Food and Drug Administration‐approved, type‐specific serologic method in a high‐risk population, and it is likely that between one to three million adults are infected with HSV-2.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 as a cause of genital herpes: impact on surveillance and prevention.
TLDR
The data suggest that seroprevalence studies based solely on HSV-2 type-specific assays underestimate overall prevalence of genital HSV infection.
Prior herpes simplex virus type 2 infection as a risk factor for HIV infection.
TLDR
Serologic studies do not support the role of CMV, EBV, or HSV-1 in HIV infection but do suggest that HSv-2 infection is a risk factor for subsequent or concurrent HIV infection.
Clinical Reactivation of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection in Seropositive Pregnant Women with No History of Genital Herpes
TLDR
Pregnant women with no history of genital HSV infections were prospectively studied to better characterize the epidemiology, natural history, and risk for shedding of HSV-2 during pregnancy.
Herpes Simplex Virus‐2 May Increase Susceptibility of the Sexual Transmission of Hepatitis C
TLDR
The findings support the role of herpes simplex virus-2 in the heterosexual transmission of hepatitis C virus infections, and more specifically an increase in susceptibility to hepatitis Cirus infections in exposed heterosexual partners with antibodies to herpes simpleX virus-1 and −2.
