Hermanus Matroos, also known as Ngxukumeshe,1 was born, probably in the last decade of the eighteenth century, presumably somewhere in western Xhosaland.2 He died on 7 January 1851, shot dead in the streets of Fort Beaufort while leading an abortive attack on the town at the beginning of what came to be known as Mlanjeni's war.
