Progressive oliguric renal failure (designated hepatorenal syndrome) commonly complicates the course of patients with advanced hepatic disease. Despite the severe derangement of renal function and ominous prognosis when renal failure develops, minimal and inconsistent pathologic abnormalities of the kidneys are found at autopsy.
