Marcellin et al.1 have recently reported the results of a 5-year open-label follow-up study of a double-blind phase III trial of the nucleotide analogues tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and adefovir dipivoxil for chronic hepatitis B. Of the 348 patients who had paired biopsies both at baseline and at year 5, 304 (87%) had histological improvement, defined as a ≥2-point decrease in Knodell necroinflammatory score (0–18) and no worsening in Knodell fibrosis score (0–4).
