Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 regulates chondrocyte proliferation in the growth plate. Heparan sulfate (HS) proteoglycans bind FGF-2. Perlecan, a heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) in the developing growth plate, however, contains both HS and chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains.
