Membrane biocompatibility: effects on cardiovascular stability in patients on hemofiltration.

In this group of critically ill patients, the use of two different membranes was associated with greater cardiovascular stability with polyacrylonitrile treatment compared to polyamide, with respect to maintenance of tissue perfusion and perfusion pressure, suggesting that extracorporeal membrane bio-incompatibility may have a role in determining cardiovascular stability during treatment with extrac Scorporeal circuits.

Hemodialysis leukopenia and complement function with different dialyzers.

Data strongly point to a pivotal role of complement system in the pathogenesis of hemodialysis leukopenia as well as the in vivo effects of four different dialyzer membranes on leukocytes and complement levels in vitro.

Anaphylatoxin formation during hemodialysis: effects of different dialyzer membranes.

Observations provide direct evidence that anaphylatoxin formation during hemodialysis is a transient phenomenon and indicate that the biocompatibility of dialysis membranes, as reflected by their complement activating potential, may be significantly different.

Role of osmolality in blood pressure stability after dialysis and ultrafiltration.

The results implicate constant plasma osmolality as a critical protective factor of blood pressure during UF and further demonstrate that changes in blood pressure may be associated from changes in both serum potassium and plasma norepinephrine concentration.
