Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to observe cortical hemodynamic responses to electric taste stimuli applied separately to the right and left sides of the tongue tip. In 11 right-handed normal adults activation occurred primarily in the insular cortex, superior temporal lobe, inferior frontal lobe, including premotor regions, and in inferior parts of the postcentral gyrus.
