Apoptotic cells (AC) are rapidly engulfed by professional phagocytes such as macrophages to avoid secondary necrosis and thus inflammation. Recognition of AC polarizes macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype, which shows homology to an alternatively activated M2 macrophage.
