Tilapia are a commonly aquacultured fish yet little is known about their normal physiology and response to disease. [] Key Method The fish were raised in recirculating systems with a high stocking density (120 g/L), and were in the middle of a 15-month production cycle. Blood was analyzed using standard techniques, and reference intervals were determined using nonparametric methods.

Figures and Tables from this paper

HEMATOLOGIC AND PLASMA BIOCHEMICAL VALUES OF HEALTHY HYBRID TILAPIA (OREOCHROMIS AUREUS × OREOCHROMIS NILOTICA) MAINTAINED IN A RECIRCULATING SYSTEM
TLDR
Blood was collected from clinically normal hybrid tilapia housed in recirculating systems for the purpose of establishing normal hematologic and plasma biochemical reference ranges that can be used in the management of culturedtilapia in reccirculating systems.
Hematology and Blood Chemistry Reference Intervals for Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens) Raised in Recirculation Systems
TLDR
Developing diagnostic hematology for fishes can enhance yellow perch culture by providing a means for the early detection and identification of infectious disease and of sub-lethal conditions that may affect production performance.
Haematological and serum biochemical profiles of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus from different culture enclosures
TLDR
The present study investigated the haematological and serum biochemical parameters of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus from different culture enclosures at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria.
Hematologic and plasma chemistry RIs for cultured Striped catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) in recirculating aquaculture systems
BACKGROUND Striped catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) is a valuable aquaculture fish species produced primarily in Southeast Asia. In the United States, it is bred as an ornamental species. Striped
Condition factor and hematology of Nile tilapia from polyculture with shrimp in brackish water
TLDR
All the values were close to those previously reported for healthy Nile tilapia, indicating that this kind of polyculture system is appropriate and safe for the species.
Haematology and plasma chemistry of the red top ice blue mbuna cichlid (Metriaclima greshakei).
TLDR
This study highlights the possibility of using previously established data for cultured cichlid species in studies with ornamental cichLid fish, to describe a range of haematology and plasma chemistry parameters.
Essential oils in diets for Nile tilapia juveniles: Productive performance and plasmatic biochemistry
TLDR
Inclusion above 0.15 of the additive showed an improvement in the levels of lipoprotein carriers, increasing HDL levels and decreasing LDL values, without interfering with the fish productive performance.
Hematology and Serum Chemistry Values for Winter Flounder (Pleuronectes americanus)
TLDR
A complete hematologic and blood biochemistry profile for normal healthy winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus, maintained in recirculated artificial seawater is reported.

Effects of ammonia and nitrate concentration on hematologic and serum biochemical profiles of hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x Morone saxatilis).
TLDR
Investigating the effects of poor water quality on hematologic and biochemical analytes in hybrid striped bass helps to develop clinical pathology as a diagnostic tool in fish finds no significant differences between groups.
Blood biochemical reference intervals for sunshine bass (Morone chrysops x Morone saxatilis) in three culture systems.
TLDR
Though most of the differences in reference intervals were minor, fish in the high-density recirculating system had higher concentrations of total protein, albumin, globulin, creatinine, and phosphorus, and lower chloride values than in the various culture systems.
Effects of temperature on hematologic and serum biochemical profiles of hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x Morone saxatilis).
TLDR
Modifications of the established reference intervals, by including fish from varied temperatures, should allow use of one reference interval for analytes, with only slight variation attributable to temperature.
Hematological effects of textile mill effluent on freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus (Trewaves).
O. mossambicus was exposed to sublethal concentrations of a textile mill effluent to study the hematological changes as a function of feeding/starvation, aeration/non-aeration and concentration.
Hematological effects of textile mill effluent on freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus (Trewaves).
: O. mossambicus was exposed to sublethal concentrations of a textile mill effluent to study the hematological changes as a function of feeding/starvation, aeration/non-aeration and concentration.
Comparison of hematologic reference intervals between culture system and type of hybrid striped bass.
TLDR
Determining reference intervals for hybrid striped bass provides a tool to assess the health status of these fish and separate reference intervals should be developed for Hybrid striped bass in different culture systems and for different types of hybrids.
Comparative Studies on the Effects of Herbicide Atrazine on Freshwater Fish Oreochromis niloticus and Chrysichthyes auratus at Assiut, Egypt
TLDR
In recent years, aquatic herbicides are widely used for controlling undesirable weeds (Maroni and Bersani 1994), and the application of herbicides has hazard effects on the fish beside the change of available plankton food (Mason 1991).
Characteristics of Peripheral Blood Cells from Rainbow Trout Evaluated by Particle Counter, Image Analysis, and Hemocytometric Techniques
TLDR
Hematological assessments of peripheral blood cells from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were compared by using a hemocytometer, image analysis, and an electronic particle counter, and the diameters of white blood cells were comparable among the methods used, but lengths and widths of redBlood cells were remarkably different among the three methods.
A New Blood Diluent for Counting the Erythrocytes and Leucocytes of the Chicken
TLDR
Hematological studies on chickens have long been hampered by the lack of a quick, readily applicable, and quantitative method for the enumeration of the leucocytes due to the fact that the nuclei of bird erythrocytes are not destroyed in the usual procedure for mammalian blood cell enumeration and therefore cannot be distinguished from theLeucocytes.
Ultrastructure of the peripheral blood leucocytes of Oreochromis mossambicus
TLDR
Peripheral blood leucocytes were examined for their fine structure and their in vivo response to colloidal carbon particles and bacteria, Aeromonas salmonicida, and three types of granulocyte were found to be phagocytic.
