The heats of combustion for 49 commercial and developmental polymers of known chemical structure were determined using an oxygen bomb calorimeter according to standard methods. The experimental results were compared with thermochemical calculations of the net heat of combustion from oxygen consumption and the gross heat of combustion from group additivity of the heats of formation of products and reactants. The polymers examined were thermally stable, char forming thermoplastics and thermoset…

Molar group contributions to the heat of combustion
Experimental results for the gross heat of combustion of over 140 commercial and developmental polymers and small molecules of known chemical structure were used to derive additive molar group
Comparison of Methods for Calculating the Combustion Heat of Biopolymers and Vegetable Biomass
In this paper various methods for calculation of gross and net heat of combustion for different biopolymers (lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, starch, pectin, proteins, lipids etc.) have been
The simplest model for reliable prediction of the total heat release of polymers for assessment of their combustion properties
Total heat release of a polymer is the heat of complete combustion of the pyrolysis gases per unit its initial mass. Microscale combustion calorimetry, an oxygen consumption technique, identifies the
Predicting heats of combustion of polymers using an empirical approach
The heats of combustion of 75 pure organic polymers with various chemical classes were used to develop empirical equations for predicting the gross and net heats of combustion of organic polymers.
Comparison of Methods for Calculation of Combustion Heat of Biopolymers
In this paper various methods for calculation of gross (Q) and net (q) heats of combustion for different biopolymers (lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, starch, pectin, proteins, lipids etc.) have
Calculation methods for the heat release rate of materials of unknown composition
The Heat Release Rate (HRR) is a critical parameter to characterise a fire. Different methods have been developed to estimate it. The most widespread techniques are based on mass balance. If the heat
Theoretical and Experimental Heat of Combustion Analysis of Paraffin-Based Fuels as Preburn Characterization for Hybrid Rocket
The energy characteristics and theoretical performance of the hybrid rocket fuels are discussed in this paper. Aluminum (Al) and boron (B) metal additives were used to increase the energy density of
Molar group contributions to polymer flammability
The specific heat-release rate is the molecular-level fire response of a burning polymer. The Federal Aviation Administration obtains the specific heat-release rate of milligram samples by analyzing
A Case Study of Polyether Ether Ketone (I): Investigating the Thermal and Fire Behavior of a High-Performance Material
TLDR
The enhanced fire resistance of PEEK was assigned to the dilution of the flammable decomposition gases as well as the formation of a protective graphite-like charred structure during its decomposition.
