Necroptosis has recently been identified as a form of programmed necrosis. It is characterized morphologically by membrane rupture and organelle swelling. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that receptor-interacting kinase 1 (RIP1 or RIPK1), RIP3 (or RIPK3), and pseudokinase mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL) are the core components of this process.
