Extreme heat negatively impacts cognition, learning, and task performance. With increasing global temperatures, workers may therefore be at increased risk of work-related injuries and illness. This study estimates the effects of temperature on worker health using records spanning 1985-2020 from an Australian mandatory insurance scheme. High temperatures are found to cause significantly more claims, particularly among manual workers in outdoor-based industries. These adverse effects have not…

Heat Stress: Ambient Temperature and Workplace Accidents in the US

Combining records for 71,225 severe accidents from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with a panel of county-level weather data for 1990 to 2010, we find that heat shocks significantly

Climate Change and Occupational Health: Are There Limits to Our Ability to Adapt?

This study considers the relationship between temperature and occupational health. The results indicate that both high and low temperatures increase injury rates and that high temperatures have more

Temperature, Workplace Safety, and Labor Market Inequality

IZA DP No. 14560 JULY 2021 Temperature, Workplace Safety, and Labor Market Inequality Using data covering the universe of injury claims from the nation’s largest worker’s compensation system

Heat and Learning

We demonstrate that heat inhibits learning and that school air conditioning may mitigate this effect. Student fixed effects models using students who retook the PSATs show that hotter school days in

Heat-related mortality tends to be associated with heatwaves that do not allow for sufficient acclimatisation to hot temperatures. In contrast, damage functions and most heatwave emergency response

Association between high temperature and work-related injuries in Adelaide, South Australia, 2001–2010

There is a significant association between injury claims and temperature in Adelaide, South Australia, for certain industries and groups and relevant adaptation and prevention measures are required at both policy and practice levels to address occupational exposure to high temperatures.

Effect of temperature on task performance in officeenvironment

Indoor temperature is one of the fundamental characteristics of the indoor environment. It can be controlled with a degree of accuracy dependent on the building and its HVAC system. The indoor
