}We report free-surface instabilities in a deep bed of fine granular material of irregular shape under vertical vibrations. At low frequency of vibration, the conical heap due to convective flow becomes unstable above a critical amplitude of vibration and acquires an azimuthal dependence which makes the heap surface corrugated. At even higher amplitude, the heap is no longer stable and splits into small heaps on a hexagonal lattice. At high frequency, we observe standing waves (stripes) at the…

Heaping, secondary flows and broken symmetry in flows of elongated granular particles.
- PhysicsSoft matter
- 2015
It is shown that the generation of the secondary flow is driven by a misalignment of the mean particle orientation with the streamlines of the flow, which is expected to be important in all flows of sufficiently anisometric grains.
Convection and fluidization in oscillatory granular flows: The role of acoustic streaming
- PhysicsThe European physical journal. E, Soft matter
- 2015
The main argument of the present paper is that acoustic streaming might develop on the surface of the large inertia particles in the vibrated granular bed and the drag force on the particles subjected to an oscillatory viscous flow is notably enhanced.
