This chapter describes the hardware that supports OpenVMS. The OpenVMS operating system was originally designed for the VAX computer. Later, the system was ported to the Alpha series of processors, and after that it is being ported to the Intel Itanium line of processors. The chapter compares these three architectures, highlighting the most important characteristics of each.
