This paper presents a novel interaction system, aimed at hands-on manipulation of digital models through natural hand gestures. Our system is composed of a new physical interaction device coupled with a simulated compliant virtual hand model. The physical interface consists of a SpaceNavigator, augmented with pressure sensors to detect directional forces applied by the user's fingertips. This information controls the position, orientation, and posture of the virtual hand in the same way that… Expand
Designing and evolving hands-on interaction prototypes for virtual reality
TLDR
This work analyses and compares several prototypes of the HandNavigator, a peripheral device allowing a user to interact with a virtual environment by controlling a virtual hand with fine dexterity, and addresses the problems of designing a device where physical phenomena, physiological behavior and device structure are all tightly combined and significantly influence the overall interaction. The human hand is considered one of the most natural tools in human-computer interaction (HCI). In virtual environments, virtual hand interactions play a key role in interactivity and realism [1].Expand
THING: Introducing a Tablet-based Interaction Technique for Controlling 3D Hand Models
TLDR
This paper introduces THING, a novel tablet-based approach that leverages multi-touch interaction for a quick and precise control of a 3D hand's pose and compared the usability of THING against mouse-only controls and a data glove in two controlled experiments. Expand
Bimanual haptic interaction with virtual environments
TLDR
The contributions of this manuscript open novel perspectives in the context of bimanual haptics and VR, allowing more natural interaction with more complex VEs. Expand
A Master-Slave Hand System for Virtual Reality Interaction
TLDR
A master-slave hand system can obtain the position, orientation and finger joint angle of the user's hand, which is used to drive a dexterous virtual hand to interact with virtual environments. Expand
The role of interaction in virtual embodiment: Effects of the virtual hand representation
TLDR
Results show that the sense of agency is stronger for less realistic virtual hands which also provide less mismatch between the participant's actions and the animation of the virtual hand. Expand
Contributions to the design of novel hand-based interaction techniques for virtual environments. (Contributions à la conception de nouvelles techniques pour interagir avec les mains en environnement virtuel)
TLDR
This thesis reduces the degrees of freedom of complex hand models in order to make multi-finger interaction possible with common multi-touch interfaces and introduces different techniques that combine passive haptic feedback and pseudo-haptics as an alternative to complex and cumbersome active interfaces. Hand Navigator: Experimenting hand navigation in desktop virtual reality - Demo paper
TLDR
This demonstration provides experimentation on several versions of the Hand Navigator, a peripheral device allowing to control a virtual hand with fine dexterity by integrating various small sensors enabling the simultaneous control of a large number of degrees of freedom. Expand
MyWorkspace: VR Platform with an Immersive User Interface
TLDR
An virtual reality platform "My Workspace" which renders an 3D virtual workspace by using an immersive user interface that integrates an optical see-through head-mounted display, a Wii remote controller, and a helmet with infrared LEDs is proposed. Expand
The Virtual Mitten: A novel interaction paradigm for visuo-haptic manipulation of objects using grip force
TLDR
The results show that participants were able to well perceive different levels of effort during basic manipulation tasks thanks to the pseudo-haptic approach and suggest that the novel interaction paradigm could be used in a wide range of applications involving one or two-hand haptic manipulation such as virtual prototyping, virtual training or video games. TLDR
The Tango is shaped like a ball and can be grasped comfortably in one hand and its pressure sensitive skin measures the contact pressures exerted by the user's hand, and accelerometers within the device measure its motion and attitude. Expand

TLDR
Although no force feedback is supplied, this paper is able to derive a visual restitution consistent with the user manipulative intentions while respecting the integrity of solid interaction with friction. Expand
