A quantitative method utilizing polymerase chain reaction was employed to evaluate the amount of human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) proviral DNA in the affected spinal cords from patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP).
