Between 2001 and 2004, the percentage of all HIV cases in patients aged >or=50 years increased from 17% to 23%. This concerning increase is expected to continue over the next decade. The increasing prevalence of HIV in these patients is a result of increased longevity in patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) as well as new primary infections in older patients.
