Abstract : A series of high dielectric constant polymers have been developed with K from 10 to over 50. The high-K polymers have high dielectric breakdown strength above 700 V/micron and high energy density up to 27 J/cc in lab-scale small sample test. The capacitor film was produced by using melt-extrusion and biaxial orientation process and film thickness from 2 micron to 10 micron has been achieved. Metallized prototype capacitors show promising performance with energy density above 3 J/cc…

A Dielectric Polymer with High Electric Energy Density and Fast Discharge Speed

It is demonstrated that a very high energy density with fast discharge speed and low loss can be obtained in defect-modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymers by combining nonpolar and polar molecular structural changes of the polymer with the proper dielectric constants.

Electrical Energy Density and Discharge Characteristics of a Poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene)Copolymer

The high electric displacement (D>0.1 C/m2) and breakdown field (600 MV/m) in polyvinylidene fluoride based polymers suggest high electrical energy density in this class of polymers. By defect

An all-organic composite actuator material with a high dielectric constant

A new class of all-organic field-type EAP composites is reported, which can exhibit high elastic energy densities induced by an electric field of only 13 V µm-1, and could find applications as artificial muscles, ‘smart skins’ for drag reduction, and in microfluidic systems for drug delivery.

Relaxor ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer for high energy density storage capacitors

This paper investigates the relaxor ferroelectric polymer-poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene/chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer for energy storage capacitors. It is found that the high

The most important polymer film used in commercial capacitors is biaxially oriented polypropylene. Other materials, such as polyester or paper, are also used for self-healing metallized capacitors,

DC breakdown strength of polypropylene films: area dependence and statistical behavior

The DC breakdown strengths of 4-15 mum thick capacitor grade polypropylene (PP) films were determined. The measurements were performed with an automatic measurement system using five electrodes with

Area dependence of breakdown strength of polymer films: automatic measurement method

An automatic method for determining the breakdown strength of thin polymer films was evaluated. The equipment consists of a scanning electrode arm with which the breakdown voltage over the film
