We present results of the detailed dust energy balance study for the seven large edge-on galaxies in the HEROES sample using three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer (RT) modelling. Based on available optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the HEROES galaxies, we derive the 3D distribution of stars and dust in these galaxies. For the sake of uniformity, we apply the same technique to retrieve galaxy properties for the entire sample: we use a stellar model consisting of a Sérsic bulge…

Dust emission profiles of DustPedia galaxies

Most radiative transfer models assume that dust in spiral galaxies is distributed exponentially. In this paper our goal is to verify this assumption by analysing the two-dimensional large-scale

The structure of the Milky Way based on unWISE 3.4 μm integrated photometry

We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy structure using an unWISE wide-field image at $3.4\,\mu$m. We perform a 3D photometric decomposition of the Milky Way taking into account (i) the

The Fornax 3D project: dust mix and gas properties in the centre of early-type galaxy FCC 167

Galaxies continuously reprocess their interstellar material. We can therefore expect changing dust grain properties in galaxies that have followed different evolutionary pathways. Determining the

Revealing the dust attenuation properties on resolved scales in NGC 628 with SWIFT UVOT data

Understanding how dust attenuation laws vary between and within galaxies is a key question if we want to reliably measure the physical properties of galaxies at both global and local scales. To

Context.Radio continuum observations of edge-on spiral galaxies reveal the appearance of radio halos as well as the large-scale structure of their magnetic fields. Furthermore, with multiple

Fraction of bolometric luminosity absorbed by dust in DustPedia galaxies

Aims. We aim to study the fraction of stellar radiation absorbed by dust, fabs, in 814 galaxies of different morphological types. The targets constitute the vast majority (93%) of the DustPedia

High-resolution radiative transfer modelling of M33

In this work, we characterize the contributions from both ongoing star formation and the ambient radiation field in Local Group galaxy M33, as well as estimate the scale of the local dust-energy

Nonparametric galaxy morphology from UV to submm wavelengths

We present the first nonparametric morphological analysis of a set of spiral galaxies from UV to submillimeter (submm) wavelengths. Our study is based on high-quality multi-wavelength imaging for

High-resolution, 3D radiative transfer modelling

Context. Investigating the dust heating mechanisms in galaxies provides a deeper understanding of how the internal energy balance drives their evolution. Over the last decade radiative transfer

Seeking edge-on galaxies with substantial extraplanar dust using a radiative transfer model: determination of the model parameter uncertainties for EON_10.477_41.954 (FGC 79)

We have revisited the target EON_10.477_41.954 in order to determine more accurately the uncertainties in the model parameters that are important for target classification (i.e. galaxies with or

HERschel Observations of Edge-on Spirals (HEROES) III. Dust energy balance study of IC 2531

We investigate the dust energy balance for the edge-on galaxy IC 2531, one of the seven galaxies in the HEROES sample. We perform a state-of-the-art radiative transfer modelling based, for the first

HERschel Observations of Edge-on Spirals (HEROES) - I. Far-infrared morphology and dust mass determination

Context. Edge-on spiral galaxies with prominent dust lanes provide us with an excellent opportunity to study the distribution and properties of the dust within them. The HEROES project was set up to

HERschel Observations of Edge-on Spirals (HEROES) - II. Tilted-ring modelling of the atomic gas disks

Context. Edge-on galaxies can offer important insight into galaxy evolution because they are the only systems where the distribution of the different components can be studied both radially and

The distribution of interstellar dust in CALIFA edge-on galaxies via oligochromatic radiative transfer fitting

We investigate the amount and spatial distribution of interstellar dust in edge-on spiral galaxies, using detailed radiative transfer modelling of a homogeneous sample of 12 galaxies selected from

The Herschel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda (HELGA). VII. A SKIRT radiative transfer model and insights on dust heating

The radiation of stars heats dust grains in the diffuse interstellar medium and in star-forming regions in galaxies. Modelling this interaction provides information on dust in galaxies, a vital

The dust energy balance in the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565

We combine new dust continuum observations of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565 in all Herschel/Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (250, 350 and 500 mu m) wavebands, obtained as part of the

The dust distribution in edge-on galaxies. Radiative transfer fits of V and K'-band images

Aims. I have analyzed a sample of seven nearby edge-on galaxies observed in the V and K’-band, in order to infer the properties of the dust distribution. Methods. A radiative transfer model,

Dust energy balance study of two edge-on spiral galaxies in the Herschel-ATLAS survey

Interstellar dust in galaxies can be traced either through its extinction effects on the star light or through its thermal emission at infrared wavelengths. Recent radiative transfer studies of

Herschel/SPIRE observations of the dusty disk of NGC 4244

We present Herschel/SPIRE images at 250, 350, and 500 mu m of NGC 4244, a typical low-mass, disk-only and edge-on spiral galaxy. The dust disk is clumpy and shows signs of truncation at the break

Herschel-ATLAS: The dust energy balance in the edge-on spiral galaxy UGC 4754

We use Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations of the edge-on spiral galaxy UGC4754, taken as part of the H-ATLAS SDP observations, to investigate the dust energy balance in this galaxy. We build
