}OBJECTIVE
To analyse prospectively the effect of highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) on CD4 T-cell responses in vitro and in vivo in HIV-infected patients.
DESIGN
Prospective study with 49 protease inhibitor-naive adult patients. Data were collected at baseline and after 3 and 6 months of HAART.
METHODS
In vitro CD4 T-cell reactivity was analysed by stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with several antigens. In vivo CD4 T-cell reactivity (delayed type…

Preliminary findings show that a low number of CD4+ T cells produce mycobacteria-specific effector cytokines in response to M.tuberculosis and M.avium antigens both in healthy individuals and HIV patients.

Insight is provided into the dynamic relationship between activated CD4+ TCR diversity and CD4/HCV coinfected individuals after suppression of HIV-1 viremia and the association of decreased activation of T cell receptor sequences may represent loss of nonspecifically activated TCR clonotypes, and possibly selective expansion of specifically activatedCD4+ clones.

Treatment consisting of HAART, adoptive cellular therapy, and IL-2 was superior to treatment with HAART alone for improving absolute and percent CD4(+) cell counts and inducing new, or increasing the magnitude of, HIV-specific immune responses in HIV infected patients.
