We investigate the properties of H I-rich galaxies detected in blind radio surveys within the hierarchical structure formation scenario using a semianalytic model of galaxy formation. By drawing a detailed comparison between the properties of H I-selected galaxies and H I absorption systems, we argue a link between the local galaxy population and quasar absorption systems, particularly for damped Lyalpha absorption (DLA) systems and sub-DLA systems. First, we evaluate how many H I-selected… Expand
A Kennicutt-Schmidt Law for Intervening Absorption Line Systems
We argue that most strong intervening metal absorption line systems, where the rest equivalent width of the Mg II λ2796 line is >0.5 A, are interstellar material in, and outflowing from, star-formingExpand
The New Numerical Galaxy Catalog ($\nu^2$GC): An Updated Semi-analytic Model of Galaxy and AGN with Large Cosmological N-body Simulation
We present a new cosmological galaxy formation model, $\nu^2$GC, as an updated version of our previous model $\nu$GC. We adopt the so-called "semi-analytic" approach, in which the formation historyExpand

Damped Lyα absorbing galaxies at low redshifts z ≤ 1 from hierarchical galaxy formation models
We investigate damped Lyα absorbing galaxies (DLA galaxies) at low redshifts (z ≤ 1) in the hierarchical structure formation scenario. In our previous paper, we showed that our model of galaxyExpand
The effect of local galaxy surface density on star formation for H i selected galaxies
We present the result of investigations into two theories to explain the star formation rate (SFR)-density relationship. For regions of high galaxy density, either there are fewer star-formingExpand
A deep survey of H I-selected galaxies: The sample and the data
In a 21 cm neutral hydrogen survey of approximately 55 deg2 out to a redshift of cz = 8340 km s-1, we have identified 75 extragalactic H I sources. These objects comprise a well-defined sample ofExpand
Stellar and Gas Properties of High H I Mass-to-Light Ratio Galaxies in the Local Universe
We present a multiwavelength study (BVRI-band photometry and H I line interferometry) of nine late-type galaxies selected from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog on the basis of apparently high H IExpand
The column density distribution function at z = 0 from H i selected galaxies
We have measured the column density distribution function, f(NH  i), at z= 0 using 21-cm H i emission from galaxies selected from a blind H i survey. f(NH  i) is found to be smaller and flatter at z=Expand
The H I Mass Function of Galaxies from a Deep Survey in the 21 Centimeter Line
The H I mass function (HIMF) for galaxies in the local universe is constructed from the results of the Arecibo H I Strip Survey, a blind extragalactic survey in the 21 cm line. The survey, consistingExpand
A homogeneous sample of sub-damped Lyman α systems — III. Total gas mass ΩH i+He ii at z > 2⋆
Absorbers seen in the spectrum of background quasars are a unique tool with which to select H I-rich galaxies at all redshifts. In turns, these galaxies allow us to determine the cosmologi- calExpand
H I-bright Galaxies in the Southern Zone of Avoidance
A blind survey for H I–bright galaxies in the southern zone of avoidance (212° ≤ l ≤ 36°, |b| ≤ 5°) has been made with the 21 cm multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64 m radio telescope. The survey,Expand
Reconciling the local galaxy population with damped Lyman α cross-sections and metal abundances
A comprehensive analysis of 355 high-quality Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) HI 21-cm line maps of nearby galaxies shows that the properties and incident rate of damped Lyman alphaExpand
Chemical Enrichment in Damped Lyα Systems from Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Models
We investigate chemical enrichment in damped Ly? (DLA) systems in the hierarchical structure formation scenario using a semianalytic model of galaxy formation. The model developed by Nagashima,Expand
