The Oxford Specialist Handbook in Plastic andReconstructive Surgery is a very useful and handy tool for any junior doctor. Its use is not just confined to plastic surgery trainees but is useful for nurses, allied health professionals, ENT, oral and maxillofacial and general surgeons, dermatologists, A&E doctors and general practitioners. Based and modelled on key themes in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Plast) examination in the classic Oxford handbook style, it contains highly relevant current clinical information and tips on surgical technique. Moreover, it has sections on hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, lower limb trauma and facial plastics, which are key themes for trainees. Practically, it is pocket-sized, weighs 150 g and as a result is readily portable; ideal for on calls. Being the first edition (2008), it has up-to-date clinical information, incorporating the latest best practice evidence and therefore is a reliable and accurate up-to-date source of information. Further, it is divided into 23 chapters including basic science, anatomy and clinical assessment, drugs, flaps, plus anatomical regions such as chapters on eyelids, head and neck, upper limb, etc. It contains many surgical drawings, which are of invaluable use to a plastic surgeon, especially for trainees. It does however have some disadvantages; it is in black and white; it lacks colour photographs–plates and could be better laid out. These are considerations perhaps for future editions, and, with the oxford handbook having included some of these in other publications such as the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Specialities, the second edition should incorporate these suggestions to make this very useful book even better.
