INTRODUCTION During embryogenesis, multipotent neuroepithelial precursor cells originate specialized neurons and different glial cell types (Gage, 2000; Roegiers and Jan, 2004; Temple, 2001). Whether a precursor cell either self-renews or differentiates is regulated by interactions between transcription factors and secreted signaling proteins that provide positional information (Jessell, 2000; Zhu and Scott, 2004).
