About 25 years ago, when I became acquainted with the name Gustav Mie, I was unable to find an entry for him in such major encyclopedias as the Britannica or even in several listings of famous scientists [T. I. Williams, A Biographical Sketch of Scientists (Wiley, New York, 1967); J. Turkevich and L. Turkevich, Prominent Scientists of Continental Europe (Elsevier, New York, 1968)]. This puzzled me indeed when I considered that Mie's 1908 paper and the terms Mie scattering and Mie effect were…

Gustav Mie: the man, the theory

Were you asked to name famous 20th century physicists, it is rather unlikely that Gustav Mie would be near the top of your list. Nevertheless, starting from the late 1940's, Mie's 1908 opus [1] on

Gustav Mie: From Electromagnetic Scattering to an Electromagnetic View of Matter

The year 2008 saw the 100th anniversary of the publication of Gustav Mie’s work “Contributions to the optics of turbid media, particularly colloidal metal solutions” in Annalen der Physik. This event

On multiple optical scattering in a scanning nephelometer

Optical nephelometry is the measurement of the angular distribution of light scattered from a particle suspension. Experimental nephelometers confirm the predictions of optical models and their
