Results of a 12 month study of traditional guinea-pig production in the western highlands of Cameroon are reported. The mean age of guinea-pigs (Cavia porcellus L.) at first parturition, kidding interval and litter size at birth were 126.30±10.40 d, 64.8±1.70 d and 1.63±0.26 kids respectively. The annual reproductive rate was 9.18 kids/breeding doe while the doe post-partum weight was 530 g. Mean body weights at birth, presumed weaning (21 d) and 15 weeks of age were 78.36±3.20, 147.51±8.10 and… Expand

Effect of Arachis glabrata Levels in the Diet on Reproduction and Pre-Weaning Growth Performance of Guinea Pigs ( Cavia porcellus L) Fed on Panicum maximum
TLDR
The results of this study show that Arachis glabrata can be included up to 20% in the ration as a source of protein for improving production performances of guinea pigs in a farm environment. Expand
REVERSIBILITY OF THE REPRODUCTIVE TOXICITY OF DIETARY GOSSYPOL IN GUINEA-PIG ( Cavia porcellus )
In order to study the effects of gossypol and the reversibility of its reproductive toxicity, fortyeight male guinea pigs were divided into four groups of 12 each. Each group received one of fourExpand
Factors influencing litter size and birthweight in the newborn long-haired guinea pigs (Cavia aperea f. porcellus)
TLDR
It was observed that the largest newborns in terms of birthweight were born by females at 18–24 months of age, and it was indicated that the increased number of pups is accompanied by the decrease in the body weight of newborns. Expand
Effect of Cassava Leaf ( Manihot esculenta ) Level in Guinea-Pigs ( Cavia porcellus ) Meal on the Physico-Chemical and Techno-logical Properties of Its Meat
TLDR
The results show that, the incorporation of cassava leafs in guinea-pigs’ diet made it possible to obtain good growth and meat of good technological quality and a significant decrease in the water holding capacity and technological yield in the different parts studied. Expand
Effect of a supplementation of Euphorbia heterophylla on nutritional meat quality of Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus L.).
TLDR
It is shown that Euphorbia heterophylla is a source of n-3 fatty acids which can improve significantly the n- 3 PUFA content of Guinea pig meat and carcass. Expand
Postnatal growth in male Dunkin–Hartley guinea pigs (Cavia cutleri f. porcellus)
TLDR
Genital organs with exception of prostate, duodenum, heart and spleen are fast-growing organs, too, and among internal organs, brain weight reaches adult size first (74 days of age). Expand
GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF SOUTH AMERICA DOMESTIC GUINEA PIG USING MOLECULAR MARKERS
TLDR
The results suggest that it is necessary to take urgent measures to prevent further genetic erosion of native guinea pigs in the Andean countries with plans for recovery and conservation of this important genetic resource in South America. Expand
Parasitic fauna of domestic cavies in the western highlands of Cameroon (Central Africa)
TLDR
The parasites in cavy husbandry in the western highlands of Cameroon are apparently composed of host-specific species in the original habitat (South America) and species acquired later from other mammals, either deleterious to cavy health or zoonotic. Expand
Genetic Diversity and Structure of Domestic Cavy (Cavia porcellus) Populations from Smallholder Farms in Southern Cameroon
TLDR
This study has shown that microsatellites are useful for the genetic characterization of cavy populations in Cameroon and that the populations investigated have sufficient genetic diversity that can be used to be deployed as a basis for weight, prolificacy and disease resistance improvement. Expand
