Dutch nurses are playing a major part in a government initiative to develop national guidelines about pain management, Roos Nieweg from the academic medical centre at the University of Amsterdam, told the conference. The working group under the auspices of the National Organisation for Quality Assurance in Hospital concluded that nurses should co-ordinate the care of the patient in pain in a systematic way. Full assessment of pain levels was essential.
