Understanding the human development of pulmonary air spaces is important for calculating the dose from exposure to inhaled materials as a function of age. We have measured, in vivo, the air space caliber of the small airways and alveoli at their natural full distension [total lung capacity (TLC)] by aerosol-derived airway morphometry in 53 children of age 6-22 yr and 59 adults of age 23-80 yr. Aerosol-derived airway morphometry utilizes the gravitational settling time of inhaled inert particles…
Charting the human respiratory tract with airborne nanoparticles - evaluation of the Airspace Dimension Assessment technique.
TLDR
RAiDA has potential as an efficient new in vivo technique to assess individual lung properties and the information obtained by such measurements may be of value for lung diagnostics, especially for the distal lungs, which are challenging to examine directly by other means.
Charting the human lung with inhaled nanoparticles : Development of AiDA - a new diagnostic technique for respiratory disease
TLDR
Preliminary data indicates that the technique may give relevant medical information about the distal lung not easily obtainable by other means, and thus may be considered as a feasible future diagnostic tool for the lung.
Do nanoparticles provide a new opportunity for diagnosis of distal airspace disease?
TLDR
The objective of this work is to provide a theoretical background for the use of nanoparticles in measuring lung morphology and to assess their applicability based on a review of the literature, and to have several advantages over other aerosol-based methods.
Physiological Measurement of the Small Airways
TLDR
Noninvasive physiological measurements are reviewed that have been reported in the literature with the specific aim being to study the small airways in lung disease, while contending that negative outcomes of these tests are probably a true reflection of the fact that no change occurred in thesmall airways.
A comparison of airway pressures for inflation fixation of developing mouse lungs for stereological analyses
TLDR
Examination of the impact of a Paw of 10, 20 and 30 cmH2O on the estimation of lung volumes and stereologically assessed parameters that describe the lung structure in developing mouse lungs shows that low Paw leads to heterogeneity in the unfolding of alveolar structures within the lungs, and that high Paw causes an overestimation of the lung volume.
Modeling Airflow and Particle Deposition in a Human Acinar Region
TLDR
A physiologically inspired whole acinar model has been developed that can be readily incorporated into human whole-lung airway models to simulate/predict the flow dynamics of toxic or therapeutic aerosols.
Computed Tomography of Pediatric Small Airways Disease
TLDR
Optimizing the examination for children and familiarity with the disorders that affect children allows the best imaging care in pediatric small airways disease.
Lung mechanics and respiratory morbidities in school-age children born moderate-to-late preterm
TLDR
Lung mechanics parameters to be similar in school-age children born MLPT and those born at term, suggesting that pulmonary plasticity continues to occur in children up to school age.
Image-based scaling laws for somatic growth and pulmonary artery morphometry from infant- to adulthood.
TLDR
An initial understanding of healthy structural pre-acinar PA development with age is provided, which can be used for computational modeling studies and comparison with diseased PA anatomy.

TLDR
This method appears to be extremely sensitive to in vivo changes in airspace dimensions and may prove useful in determining changes in these dimensions associated with normal lung development and early disease states.

TLDR
It is concluded that aerosol-derived lung morphometry is a responsive noninvasive probe of peripheral air-space diameters, consistent with Weibel's symmetric lung model A for small airways and more distal air spaces.

TLDR
The morphometric data collected in this study are used to construct an idealized model of human acinar airways that can be related to existing models of the human bronchial tree.

TLDR
The results of this study suggest that in contrast to conventional lung function techniques, aerosol-derived airway morphometry might be a powerful tool for the detection of small changes in peripheral airway geometry.
Aerosol Derived Airway Morphometry at Different Levels of Lung Inflation
TLDR
The results showed that EAD increased with lung volume nearly linearly in peripheral lung regions whereas the increase in proximal regions was steeper and more heterogeneous within the group.
Use of aerosols to estimate pulmonary air-space dimensions.

Single-breath inhalations of monodisperse aerosols were performed with a group of normal subjects to determine aerosol recovery from the human lung after periods of breath holding to evaluate pulmonary air-space dimensions by means of aerosols.

TLDR
A high viscosity plastic was used that is not known to have been employed previously for corrosion casting of lungs, allowing three dimensional study of the peripheral airspaces of the developing lung and will be useful for investigating the lung pathology of neonates.
Postnatal human lung growth.
TLDR
Standard morphometric methods were applied to the lungs of 36 boys and 20 girls aged from 6 weeks to 14 years, dying as a result of trauma or after short illnesses, and there is a wide scatter of the total number of alveoli in the growing lung.
