T HERE is significant evidence supporting the concept of t r auma as the cause of some spinal epidermoid cysts. Many reports refer to spinal epidermoids tha t developed several years following single or multiple lmnbar punctures. In most instances the taps were per formed for the diagnosis and t r ea tmen t of tuberculous meningitis. Choremis, et al., 4 were the first to suggest a relationship between direct implantat ion of epidermis by a lumbar puncture needle and subsequent t umor formation…
Intramedullary epidermoid tumors of the thoracic spinal cord. Report of two cases.
TLDR
Recently, Van Gilder and Schwartz TM reported a method of producing epidermoid and dermoid tumors in the albino rat by direct skin implantation along the neuraxis; this evidence supports the concepts of a congenital origin or subsequent development after repeated lumbar puncture.
Spinal Dermoid and Epidermoid Cyst: An Institutional Experience and Clinical Insight into the Neural Tube Closure Models
TLDR
The results of this study support the multisite closure model and attempt to provide a retrospective reflection of neural tube closure model in humans by using SDECs as the surrogate marker of Neural tube closure defect.
Epidermoid (mixed) tumors of the central nervous system.
TLDR
According to their origin f rom one or more germ layers, these tumors are usually subdivided into epidermoids, which contain only epidermal tissue and debris and lack dermal glands, and teratoids, 2s which contain recognizable tissues of two germ layers; and tera tomas whose characterist ic cells are derived f rom all three germ layers.
Dermoid tumors of the spinal cord.
  • I. Bailey
  • Medicine
    Journal of neurosurgery
  • 1970
TLDR
Clinical and radiological evidence of spina bifida was found in about half of the cases and suggested the diagnosis of a developmental type of tumor when patients presented with progressive spinal cord compression, and evacuation of the cystic contents gave lasting relief of the low-back pain.
Epidermoid Cyst Associated with a Dermal Sinus
  • Medicine
  • 2008
TLDR
A N intramedullary epidermoid with a dermal sinus is an unusual association and a previously reported coincidence of these malformations is found although there are many definitive papers on these uncommon entities.
Vascular permeability and axonal regeneration in tissues autotransplanted into the brain
TLDR
The hypothesis that regeneration of axons may be dependent upon a source of protein in the extracellular fluid surrounding their growing tips is supported.
Epidermoid Tumor of the Thoracic Spine in the Adult: A Case Report
TLDR
A 62-year-old female with history of progressive right lower extremity numbness presented with a rare case of epidermoid cyst of the thoracic spine, which was caused by lumbar puncture, and it is postulate that a skin fragment had migrated to a site where it developed into a tumor.

MALIGNANT CHANGE IN AN INTRACRANIAL EPIDERMOID
TLDR
Intracranial epidermoids are rare tumours, of congenital origin arising from epithelial rests, usually in relation to neural crest derivative structures, and almost always benign, slowly-growing tumours containing structureless kerato-hyaline material bounded by a capsule.
DERMOID AND EPIDERMOID TUMORS (CHOLESTEATOMAS) OF CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
TLDR
This report is based on a clinical, surgical and pathologic study of fifteen congenital epithelial tumors of the central nervous system that have been verified microscopically at the Mayo Clinic, with a complete story of this unusual and very interesting group of tumors.
PEARLY TUMOURS IN RELATION TO THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
TLDR
The origin of these tumours remained obscure until 1854, when von Remak suggested that they might arise from misplaced epithelial tissue, which was substantiated by Bostroem, who in 1897 agreed with their epithelial origin.
INTRASPINAL EPIDERMOID TUMOURS IN THE LUMBAR REGION OF CHILDREN
Six children who complained of pain and stiffness in the back had been treated with lumbar punctures between six and ten years before they came under observation. They were found to have intrathecal
Pathology of Tumors of the Nervous System.
TLDR
This is the second edition of the most definitive contemporary treatise on nervous system tumors written in English and contains ample descriptions of all the commonly recognized neoplasms of the nervous system, including those of developmental and of secondarily invasive origin.
FURTHER OBSERVATIONS ON PEARLY TUMORS
TLDR
The observations which follow, as well as the articles of Cushing and Horrax, have cleared up many doubtful points in my original description of two rather rare tumors of the type first depicted by Cruveilhier.
