Pro-carcinogens, such as benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), that are exogenous ligands of the aromatic hydrocarbon receptor may influence the susceptibility of target-cell populations through the up-regulation of cytochrome P450 (CYP) mixed function oxidases.
