We have only limited information on the biology of the black howler monkey or saraguato (Alouatta pigra) in the wild. Habitat destruction and hunting are contributing to the decline of the species. The black howler monkey is found only in a reduced area on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Belize and northern Guatemala, where there is tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen rain forest [1].
