A Knickgiebel (Knickdach) or "Chinese roof" has been proposed for several archaic Greek temples. The evidence indicates that some buildings of mudbrick or wood, built in the ninth, eighth or early seventh centuries, may have had such roofs. Only a few of the stone temples did, and these temples can be dated to the first quarter of the sixth century. The origin of the Knickgiebel may have lain in the need to protect the roof and wood or mudbrick walls from rainwater running off the double…
