Motivated by the recent claim for gravitational lensing by a cosmic string, we reinvestigate the probability of finding such an event with upcoming wide-field surveys. If an observed lensing event is suspected to be due to a string, observations of the vicinity of the event in a circle of diameter L centered on the observed lens should reveal several additional lensing events. For a string located nearby $(z\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.5),$ we find that observations in a region of size $\ensuremath…

Direct observation of cosmic strings via their strong gravitational lensing effect – I. Predictions for high-resolution imaging surveys
We use current theoretical estimates for the density of long cosmic strings to predict the number of strong gravitational lensing events in astronomical imaging surveys as a function of angular
Observing cosmic string loops with gravitational lensing surveys
We show that the existence of cosmic strings can be strongly constrained by the next generation of gravitational lensing surveys at radio frequencies. We focus on cosmic string loops, which
Femto-lensing due to a cosmic string
We consider the femto-lensing due to a cosmic string. If a cosmic string with the deficit angle $\Delta\sim 100$ [femto-arcsec] $\sim10^{-18}$ [rad] exists around the line of sight to a gamma-ray
Gravitational lensing by cosmic strings: What we learn from the CSL-1 case
Cosmic strings were postulated by Kibble in 1976 and, from a theoretical point of view, their existence finds support in modern superstring theories, both in compactification models and in theories
Direct Observation of Cosmic Strings via their Strong Gravitational Lensing Effect: II. Results from the HST/ACS Image Archive
We have searched 4.5 deg 2 of archival Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) images for cosmic strings, identifying close pairs of similar, faint galaxies and selecting groups
Wave Effect in Gravitational Lensing by the Ellis Wormhole
We propose the use of modulated spectra of astronomical sources due to gravitational lensing to probe Ellis wormholes. The modulation factor due to gravitational lensing by the Ellis wormhole is
Characterizing a cosmic string with the statistics of string lensing
The deep imaging of the field of an observed lensing event by a cosmic string reveals many additional lensing events. We study the statistics of such string lensing. We derive explicit expressions
Early universe cosmology and its observational effects on the cosmic microwave background
This Thesis is written in three parts. The first part describes the analytic calculation of the unequal-time correlator of cosmic strings and superstrings. The first efficient constraint analysis of
Observational constraints on cosmic strings: Bayesian analysis in a three dimensional parameter space
Current data exclude cosmic strings as the primary source of primordial density fluctuations. However, in a wide class of inflationary models, strings can form at later stages of inflation and have
Cosmic Strings from Supersymmetric Flat Directions
Flat directions are a generic feature of the scalar potential in supersymmetric gauge field theories. They can arise, for example, from D-terms associated with an extra Abelian gauge symmetry. Even

Cosmic string lens phenomenology: Model of Poisson energy distribution
We present a novel approach for investigating lens phenomenology of cosmic strings in order to elaborate detection strategies in galaxy deep field images. To account for the complexity of the
Gravitational lensing by cosmic string loops.
TLDR
The deflection of a light ray caused by the gravitational field of a cosmic string loop in the weak field limit is calculated and an analytic solution is found for the special case of a circular loop perpendicular to the optical axis.
GRAVITATIONAL LENSING SIGNATURE OF LONG COSMIC STRINGS
The gravitational lensing by long, wiggly cosmic strings is shown to produce a large number of lensed images of a background source. In addition to pairs of images on either side of the string, a
Will cosmic strings be discovered using the Space Telescope
Cosmic strings are topologically stable defects in the vacuum which may be produced at a phase transition in the early Universe. Some may form closed loops, and some may be open, extending over the
The Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey - II. Gravitational lens candidate selection and follow-up
We report the final results of the search for gravitationally lensed flat-spectrum radio sources found in the combination of CLASS (Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey) and JVAS (Jodrell Bank VLA Astrometric
Cosmic Strings
Cosmic strings, a hot subject in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, lost its appeal when it was found that it leads to inconsistencies in the power spectrum of the measured cosmic microwave background
The Formation of Families of Twin Galaxies by String Loops
It is argued that if strings are responsible for many of the quasar lens systems and for galaxy formation, then nearby string loops should produce a substantial number of groups of near-identical
An apparent gravitational lens with an image separation of 2.6 arc min
We report here observations which confirm Paczynski's speculation1 that the previously known2 pair of 19th magnitude quasars 1146 + 111B,C are actually two images of a single object produced by a
Gravitational lensing effects of vacuum strings - Exact solutions
Exact interior and exterior solutions to Einstein's field equations are obtained for vacuum strings. For a uniform density vacuum string the interior solution (in cross section) is a spherical cap

TLDR
A simple model for the evolution of the string network is presented, and related to the statistical mechanics of string networks, which predicts the long string density throughout the history of the universe from a single parameter.
